Bich Dong Pagoda, Ninh Binh

4.0
#7 of 45 in Things to do in Ninh Binh
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Bich Dong Pagoda stands out with its unusual formation--each of the three pagodas rest on three different levels of the mountain. Climb the steep stairs, wind through the caves, and see rice fields on the way up. The path abounds with vistas of pointed green mountains, mist, and rivers. The pagodas have different designs--the low pagoda boasts five departments, while half of the middle one is carved into the mountain. A green pond encloses the top pagoda, creating a serene and picturesque ambiance. Enter the gloomy interiors displaying altars, Buddhist statues, and smelling strongly of incense. Consider bringing a flashlight to better explore the caves. Make your Ninh Binh itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • It is quite and gorgeous. There are 3 temples in Bich Dong Pagoda ( Low, Middle, High) You can easily find a way to the Low and Middle one. The third one, however, is hidden behind the middle temple.....  more »
  • There is a small alley beside the small temple in the second picture which will lead you to a hidden temple in the cave. I found it really cool and it also will lead you to another temple.  more »

  • Bich Dong Pagoda dates back to 1428 and It’s a really beautiful place to visit. I would recommend going with a tour guide as the locals who hang around the entrance are well known for scams & thefts on unaware travellers – this is probably good advice for most of Vietnam’s tourist hotspots anyway. Lots of stairs to climb to reach all areas but the view is great and if you keep an eye out, you'll see mountain goats up on the higher areas of the mountains.
  • Wear proper shoes in order to get to the very top of the mountain. After the highest tempel is a path leading all the way up to the summit. The lower path is slippery and gets steeper. If you are confident in your climbing skills you can go to the very top and enjoy an unique view into the valley.
