Feel the grandeur of ancient Samarkand at Bibi-Khanym Mosque Bibi-Xonum, the remains of a gigantic mosque and a jewel of Tamerlane's empire, built after his Indian campaign in 1404. With the 40 m (313 ft) high sky-blue cupola over the main chamber and two smaller mosques in its spacious courtyard, this represented the largest mosque complex in the Islamic world at the time. Falling into disrepair after 1583, the mosque still displays its classic Persian-Islamic style with four ornate iwans and a pishtaq standing 38 m (125.5 ft) tall. The interior courtyard features a colossal stone Quran stand. A mausoleum to Tamerlane's favorite Chinese wife stands opposite to the mosque. • Located behind the Registan this a beautiful mosque although largely rebuilt following an earthquake just over a hundred years ago.  more »
  • It is a huge mosque that can be seen from the hills of Afrashab and shahhidsinda. It was the size of the best in Central Asia, and the power was amazing. The tiles had fallen down in some places, but i could feel the flow of time. The courtyard is planted with trees and flowers, so you can take a break. Because it was on the hill, the wind which blew through was very comfortable.
