Visit Castillo de Piria for a sense of Uruguay's upper crust at the turn of the 20th century. Completed in 1897, the medieval-inspired castle and gardens served as the residence of wealthy businessman Francisco Piria--one of the first people to realize the potential of coastal tourism in Uruguay. Through the years, it has also housed presidents and hosted important cultural gatherings. While Piria's castle has suffered somewhat from a lack of quality maintenance, its rustic charm remains intact, and its interior has been converted to a small Spanish-language museum displaying period furnishings, weapons, tools, and artwork. Step out onto the second floor's Florentine balconies for panoramic views of the city. Stroll through the grounds, dotted with native palm trees, and look for the bronze statue of Mercury. You can tour on your own or join one of the visits organized by the tourist office in Piriápolis. Plan my trip to Piriapolis with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

Cool property with nice plants and yeah there's an old castle with a free museum inside. Shame they let a circus put a tent up in front of the view of the nearby mountainside. Worth a visit.
The mesuem offers a tunnel into the past of the Uruguayan tycoon. I only wish there was an English booklet or descriptions. Don't forget to clime onto the third floor, which offers a panorama view of the mountain on the other side of the road.
