Palacio Salvo, Montevideo

3.8
Originally planned as a luxury hotel, Palacio Salvo instead became an unusual mixture of private apartments, offices, music studios, and radio stations. This Gothic-style palace from 1928 was initially topped with a lighthouse, later replaced with an antenna that raised the height of the building to 100 m (328 ft) and made it the tallest building in South America. Officially, tourists are not allowed inside the building unless they rent an apartment within the exclusive tower section on the 14th floor. Ask the concierge or one of the tenants to give you a brief tour of the interior. • Amazing and very interesting history and architecture! Guide Diego and receptionists super attentive and friendly. Beautiful view from the top of the tower. Inside is the Tango Museum, which was also very interesting. Palace where the world's most famous Tango (La Couparsita) was heard for the first time. Entry for the two guided tours cost 350.00 Uruguayan pesos (R $38,00). Be sure to visit.

  • Beautiful building, of singular architecture, majestic and imposing... Pity not to be 100% preserved. Important place for history and culture should have greater attention and preservation of the Uruguayan government.
