1972 Museum, Montevideo

4.6
1972 Museum honors the survivors and victims of a crash that involved a group of high school rugby players, their friends, and relatives. The story that inspired many books revolves around 16 Uruguayans who endured 72 days in the cold mountains, with no food or proper clothing. See their personal belongings, airplane debris, documents, and photographs from the "Valley of Tears." The 19th-century museum building with balconies made of Carrara marble is a worthwhile architectural attraction in and of itself. • Really enjoyed my visit here, we watched a 15 minute overview first in English which was very informative. The rest of the museum is in Spanish & English and really good. Highly recommend a visit.  more »

  • Great little museum with a comprehensive explanation of every little detail you can imagine relating to the crash and survival events in the Andes in 1972. Whilst exhaustive in it's detailing, it also really helps build a context of the conditions around the event. The founder and curator was on hand to answer questions and elaborate with yet more details (except about eating human flesh...although I didn't ask in case he knew about this too ;)! Ultimately, the museum leaves a lasting, moving impression, largely because of the statement by parents of the victims. Really amazing. I spent a lot longer here than any other museum or gallery I visited in Montevideo.
  • Wonderful little museum. Fabulous job of telling the story. I was impressed with the artifacts that had been collected for display. Very happy that there were English translations of everything.
