Lookout · Landmark
Take in the views of great Yosemite landscapes at Washburn Point. This lofty lookout sits on the road to Glacier Point, some 76 m (250 ft) above its more popular neighbor, offering a different perspective on Half Dome and stacked waterfalls spilling down the Merced River. You will need to tackle a short flight of stone steps to reach this perch. If you need restrooms or snacks, find them at Glacier Point. Note that this viewpoint closes seasonally due to snow, but can be visited on skies in the winter. • This was by far my favorite view in the park!! It was absolutely amazing! We only had a day in Yosemite so we didn't see everything, but this was one our last stops and was by far my favorite. The view was spectacular! Visit this area if you can, you will not be disappointed!
  • I really love this spot for views of Half Dome at sunset and dusk. There’s a parking lot big enough that it never feels overrun like nearby spots do and because nearby spots are so busy and thought to be so much better, Washburn feels like a welcome relief from crowds. Definitely arrive early enough to scout your spot or couple of spots. Several waterfalls give the view from this vista an otherworld, almost fairy tale-like feel and it gives you a lot of composition options. Don’t discount Washburn just because the crowds do. One caveat, it’s not the best spot for photographing the Milky Way at night over Labor Day weekend, which doesn’t line up with Half Dome and from this spot doesn’t give you a very interesting foreground for Milky Way sky photos. But like I said, it’s great for Golden Hour, sunset and dusk on Labor Day weekend especially if arrive before the line of the setting sun covers the Half Dome side of the valley wall.
