Mission: to tell the story of our maritime history and the Chesapeake Bay. In doing so, we strive:
• To preserve the heritage of the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay.
• To interpret their culture and their contribution to the region.
• To provide and support educational opportunities.
• To preserve and enhance the environment of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Watermen's Museum showcases Native Virginia Indian tools, maritime trade in Colonial America, the transformation of working our waters of the Chesapeake Bay thru to the present, model vessels, harvest tools and techniques used by Chesapeake Bay fisheries. The museum also features a multi-media presentation room and gift shop.
The Carriage House features a 900 sq foot deck overlooking the York River. This beautiful venue is available for rent for special events such as weddings, receptions, birthday parties, etc.
The Boat House is 450 sq foot structure used for boatbuilding, restoration and exhibition.
The Historic Windmill is an 18th century replica designed to interpret colonial engineering, milling, and commerce.
We offer educational programs for students of all ages and needs that include lectures, videos, hands-on activities and demonstrations. We also hold a Pirate Summer Camp! I went for help with a wooden boat that needs some work. The people there were extremely friendly and helpful! The location itself was great too. Definitely worth a visit if you have any interest in boats or woodworking.
When the Watermen’s Museum provides a beautiful private beach for a wedding, parking, a lovely high deck for cocktails, the Carriage House for serving food, and a huge tent decorated in chandeliers and twinkle lights, what more could one want? How about perfect weather and the most awesome pink sunset view in Yorktown? That was our experience at our daughter’s August 24th Waterman’s Museum wedding. Our photographer was so excited about all the windmill, the museum, boats and beach. Very little decorating is needed; scenic views everywhere you look! Steve Ormsby and staff were helpful and accommodating every step of the way! The lawn and sidewalks were perfect. Our guests said it was one of the most beautiful weddings they had ever attended! This is truly a top Virginia wedding venue! We couldn’t be happier!
