Step back in time to the days of the Founding Fathers and the Revolutionary War at Colonial Williamsburg. The interactive, living-history museum--which covers 122 hectares (301 acres)--is actually a network of restored Colonial structures manned by costumed, in-character employees. Ride in a rented horse-drawn carriage down the cobblestone streets past the Governor's Palace and Capitol Building. Walk through Merchants Square, an 18th-century marketplace dotted with original storefronts. Take part in America’s fight for independence during a reenactment of the storming of the Governor's Palace or the march to victory at Yorktown. You can even participate in a trial. Purchase the combined Historic Triangle ticket for discounted entries to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. I had been to Williamsburg at age 11 and age 24, not since. I'm 55, and we wanted a Christmas getaway. It's larger, better than I had remembered. People are generally welcoming, and the food... more »
One of my favorite vacation destinations. Incredible and meticulous in every detail. The workers here simply know all there is to know about colonial life, especially the tradesmen and women. It's a joy to visit here always. The best time to visit is Halloween through Christmas, as they have special displays, exhibits, and tours you can take that aren't offered other times of the year. If there were six stars to give, I'd give them to Colonial Williamsburg.
My wife and I went one year during an anniversary trip and we had a great time. We enjoyed each of the buildings and each of the reenactments. We enjoyed eating in the restaurants and getting the colonial experience. We took our kids back recently and while they enjoyed the same experience, I would recommend a different time than the heat of the summer. My wife and I also did the haunted ghost tour one evening and that was a good time as well. In my opinion, whether you are a history buff or not, this is a must see in Virginia, especially if you are in or around Williamsburg.
