President Lincoln's Cottage, Washington DC

Immerse yourself in American history at President Lincoln's Cottage, where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War and where he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. Admission is by guided tour only and includes five rooms of the Gothic revival-style building. The cottage itself is sparsely furnished, but information provided by docents about Lincoln's ideas, presidency, and private life makes it easy to imagine the iconic leader in these surroundings. Historical prints, photographs, and artifacts help to fill in the blanks. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended, especially if you plan to visit on a weekend. Photography is not permitted inside the cottage or visitor center. • This is a must-see for anyone interested in Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Civil War. The Lincoln family lived here several summers, and the cottage played an important role in Lincoln’s drafting of the...  more »
  • OK. No furniture, but this place captures the spirit of the man and his ideas. The excellent docents don’t spoon feed you. Rather they engage you to draw you in. I see why some don’t like that but our...  more »

  • One historical landmark more DC locals should appreciate and take advantage of is President Lincoln's cottage. I experience nice educational trips for the kids and myself here. There is so much to see of some beautiful DC historical sights that make me proud of being a Washingtonian. They have a really nice gift shop and their staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. A staff member in their gift shop by the name of Lacey was very pleasant and hospitable to me and my family. They have many family oriented events here as well. I look forward to spending more time here throughout the seasons.
  • Guided tour through the mansion is slightly disappointing: half of the tour shares stories from Lincoln's stay in the cottage, but the other half was mostly to interact and ask opinions. It would have been interesting to learn more about actual period informational (was of living for instance). Tour on Sunday morning didn't sell out: can buy on site. Worth arriving at least 30 minutes before tour to read through the galleries. No cafe/bistro on site (a pod cafe machine available only, no sitting area) Large parking lot, free, and kids playground onsite.
