National Gallery of Art - Sculpture Garden, Washington DC

4.5
The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is the most recent addition to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It is located on the National Mall between the National Gallery's West Building and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
Completed and opened to the public on 23 May 1999, the location provides an outdoor setting for exhibiting several pieces from the museum's contemporary sculpture collection. The collection is centered on a fountain which, from December to March, is converted to an ice-skating rink. (Such a rink predated the construction of the garden.) The outdoor Pavilion Café lies adjacent to the garden.
Laurie Olin and his firm, OLIN, were the landscape architects who redesigned the garden.

  • It's amazing to see so many masterpieces together. We don't think of DC as a center of painting or sculpture and yet! Special mention on the French painters gathered in a breathtaking room!

  • Love this sculpture garden. Has wonderful, silly, fun artwork and even a ice rink during the cold months. A restaurant and restrooms if you need them. Of course the food is pricey - but then again so is much of the cafes, restaurants, and food places on the Mall and in DC. They also have special events so sometimes it may be crowded.
  • Nice hidden gem in DC. Had a cafe to too. Beautiful sculptures and gardens to view. Nice sitting area with water fountains too was a perfect way to relax.
