Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC

#7 of 38 in Parks in Washington DC
Part of the Smithsonian Institution and one of the most prominent modern art museums in the United States, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden creates a striking picture among the historical and functional architecture of the city. Joseph H. Hirshhorn bequeathed his collection to the United States as a gift for the life the country gave him as a new immigrant. The building is a hollow cylinder surrounded by a renowned sculpture garden that showcases the work of Rodin and others. Permanent and temporary exhibits showcase artwork from the French impressionists to the latest in contemporary art. Some of these exhibits are interactive, such as Yoko Ono's Wish Tree for Washington, D.C., where visitors' wishes hang from the branches. Visit the attraction's website for details on current exhibits, including performance art and lectures. Guided public tours take place on the weekends, but the rest of the week visitors are encouraged to enjoy the galleries on their own. • This was our favorite museum when we visited the city 8 years ago ... and it was again on this trip. We love contemporary art and the layout and space here is wonderful ... so many fun things to see ....  more »
  • Museum with amazing structure that you "discover" once you enter. It exhibits works of the European avant-garde but many cannot be seen due to a "giant" temporary exhibition. To visit the gardens full of statues: from Rodin to Tomato, from Moore to Fontana.

  • 'What absence is made of'...... This is a fascinating exhibit and worth taking the time out to visit. I believe this is a permanent one, so should be there throughout the year. Other exhibits are also great. Nice little cafe on the ground floor. Their basement is interesting.... A statement of sorts in its own way
  • Modern/contemporary art museum with interesting exhibits. If you "get" modern art, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Hirshhorn. It's not really my scene, but I still enjoyed the 1.5 hours I spent here. Highly recommend for any art lovers though
