Heurich House Museum, Washington DC

The Heurich House Museum preserves the legacy of Christian Heurich and enriches the cultural life of Washington, DC. The mansion was built from 1892-94 by German immigrant, local brewer, and philanthropist Christian Heurich (1842-1945). He and his family lived in their Dupont Circle home from its completion in 1894 until his wife’s death in 1956. Recognized as Washington, DC’s most successful brewer, he ran the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co., the city’s longest-operating brewery (1873-1956), until his death at 102. The mansion is notable for its fireproof construction, original interiors, and family collections. The museum, located at 1307 New Hampshire Avenue in Dupont Circle, is open for regular public events and public tours Thursday through Saturday at 11:30 am, 1:00 and 2:30 pm. Private tours and event rentals are also available. For more information, visit heurichhouse.org or call 202-429-1894.

  • Coming from Germany and then from Austria to settle in Baltimore in a brewery business that he made prosper, Christian Heurich (with the Americanized pronunciation in "Hi-rick") had this house built in Washington DC to set up his family. Unfortunately widowed twice without offspring, he finally had 4 children (including a baby who died a few months ago) of his 3rd wife... niece of the first and with the same first name. The house features furniture of amazing taste (Louis XV-style rocking chairs, rococco-style wheelchairs...), and rather dark, sculpted furniture. Traumatised by fires in his breweries, Heurich favoured steel and wrought iron for the construction and layout of his house, whose chimneys were only decorative. A precursor system of centralized suction (vacuum) has even been installed. Tours are organised 3 days a week at a rate of 3 per day at a fixed time, with a reservation recommended on the internet (donation of $10 suggested). The entrance is via an elevator on the street side and the tour includes the ground floor, the 1st floor as well as the basement (where there is an informal German tavern-style dining room with Germanic language inscriptions painted on the walls). The house has 4 air-conditioned levels and a veranda overlooking a small garden and an annex with a temporary exhibition on Heurich beers. A quasi-private visit that is worth the trip.
