Oconee Station State Historic Site, Walhalla

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Oconee Station was established in 1792 as a blockhouse on the South Carolina frontier. Troops were removed in 1799. The site also has the Williams Richards House, which was built in the early 19th century as residence and trading post. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 as Oconee Station and Richards House.

There is a short spur trail to Station Cove Falls, which is a 60 ft (18 m) waterfall, and the Oconee Passage of the Palmetto Trail.

The Oconee Station and the William Richards House were photographed by Jack Boucher of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1960. Both structures are open for tours on weekends and by appointment. Admission is free.

  • I have always loved this place. Many wonderful memories were born here including getting engaged sunday! A wonderful short or long hike for picnics, exercise, or just a break. A great place for those just passing through and want to stretch their legs as well.. I think all locals should come here with their families. Just be careful at the waterfall y'all!
  • Went on a ranger-guided hike. Good hiking for beginners, but the views are worthwhile for others. My grade-schoolers were able to keep up, and my wife and I were able to complete the round trip to and from the falls in the nearby national forest without difficulty, with our baby and toddler strapped to us. The falls themselves were majestic. We didn't get to see the ruins of the station, unfortunately.
