Mission San Xavier del Bac, Tucson

4.8
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Tucson
Founded in the 17th century, Mission San Xavier del Bac was part of a chain of Spanish missions in the Sonora Desert. The mission was taken away from its Jesuit founders in the 18th century and turned over to the Franciscans. The Moorish design of the white building makes for an elegant landmark against the desert background. It's often referred to as the white dove of the desert. The exterior complements the meticulously crafted interior altar. No records exist with the names of the designers or builders, but local people believe that most of the work fell to the Native Americans who worked for the friars. • Amazing beautiful spiritual place! The people in the gift shop are very kind and sell gorgeous stuff! Also, the fry bread that is sold by the vendor is delicious! They only take cash as they work outside and in the heat!! We only had $12 cash and our total was $17, they said "No problem" ...very kind! We recommend the Green Chili fry bread !!! Definitely plan on going back for Mass and lunch..and maybe to buy more beautiful jewelry! ♡
  • A beautiful church with history. The museum is free to explore. The gift shop has a variety of products with various prices. The kids like $2 finger puppets. Large parking lot with handicap spaces. The weekends has local food vendors selling tasty food. The Hill climb is traditional. Tourist go left, but the old way is to walk right like a pilgrimage and then see the statues and make a prayer for someone else to Mary. A wonderful place to visit or spend a Sunday.
