Monson Lake State Park is a state park of Minnesota, USA, originally established as a memorial to 13 Swedish American pioneers who were killed there in the Dakota War of 1862. A district of 1930s New Deal structures is on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite being nearly doubled in size in 2009, the state park remains one of Minnesota's smallest. It is located off Minnesota State Highway 9 just west of Sunburg and 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Willmar. This seasonally-staffed park is managed from nearby Sibley State Park.

  • This has the potential to be a very nice state park. However it seems like the state doesn’t spend any money on it. Understaffed, run down buildings. Geocache was missing.  more »
  • Hiked Sibley state park and saw monson was close so came over and hiked the 1 mile loop. Yes it’s small. Yes bathrooms closed. But the loop was excellent once we found it. Lol. We think it was more...  more »

  • If you're looking for a quiet area to camp with good bathrooms, showers, fishing, and boating, Monson Lake isn't a bad choice. There is also a good nature trail which is accessible behind the bathrooms. We saw a couple garter snakes, a lot of frogs, and the walk on the trail was filled with interesting things to observe. If you want to go swimming or rent something to paddle on a lake in, Sibley State Park isn't far but tends to be more crowded.
  • This is a little baby State Park. Known for its fishing, this is the primary reason to come here. It's quiet, not very busy and only has 20 camp sites and a very nice group picnic shelter - surprising for a SP of this size. If you're mosquito candy like I am, bring a screen tent or be prepared to be assaulted faster than a DQ on a steamy hot MN summer night.
