A series of coastal defense fortresses built to protect the United States from 1776 to 1947 make up Fort Moultrie. Nine British warships attacked the unfinished and still-unnamed fort in 1776, but they failed to destroy it. Reportedly, cannonballs bounced off its walls, and the ships were forced to retreat. The fort has been restored to portray different periods in its military history, which spanned more than 170 years. Begin your self-guided tour of tour at the visitor center. Here you'll be guided through the fort's transformations in reverse order, starting from World War II. Fort Moultrie Reviews
I've been here before, but still get a feeling of pain at the tragedy that became the great American Civil War. Looking out over the water at Fort Sumter brought it all into perspective. This is an.... more »
Great place to visit! Just be careful on the Island in general as the local police LOVE handing out tickets for just about anything. more »
Great place to visit a historic fort, view Fort Sumter, and the opening of the Port of Charleston. Fort Moultrie is easily accessible and offers the opportunity to see Fort Sumter from a distance without having to dedicate several hours to take the boat trip out to the fort. Recommend seeing the 20 minute film at the visitors center for historical context and then walking across the street to the fort. At the fort, be sure to walk up to the observation tower for great pictures. Fort Moultrie also provides a great location to view large container ships entering and exiting the Port of Charleston. We combined a visit to Fort Moultrie with a trip to the beach. It was well worth the stop.
It's quite a drive depending on where you live. But it's worth it. It's a beautiful open area and parking is really good. There's lots of historical sides and direction and it's very easy to get around and see things. You also get access to the Sullivan Island Beach area okay. If you were to go to the beach on the other side of the island there's a lot of people there. As your notice here at this part there's hardly anybody there very private very relaxing. There's lots to see you can go inside the fort is lot of open areas in there it's lots of fun
