Naumkeag, Stockbridge

Naumkeag is the former country estate of noted New York City lawyer Joseph Hodges Choate located at 5 Prospect Hill Road, Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The estate's centerpiece is a 44-room, Shingle Style country house designed principally by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White, and constructed in 1886 and 1887.
The estate is noted for its large gardens, which were designed in the mid-20th century by noted landscape designer Fletcher Steele in conjunction with Choate's daughter Mabel. A National Historic Landmark District, Naumkeag is now owned by The Trustees of Reservations, who operate it as a nonprofit museum.
Naumkeag was designed by noted architect Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White in 1885 as the summer estate for Joseph Hodges Choate (1832–1917), a prominent New York City attorney and American ambassador to England from 1899 to 1905, and then his daughter Mabel. The house is built in the Shingle Style with a wood-shingled exterior featuring brick and stone towers, prominent gables and large porch, and interiors with fine woodwork. It contains the Choate family's furniture, Chinese porcelain, and artwork collected from America, Europe, and the Far East.

  • I've been here twice now, and recently upgraded to a membership of the Trustees, which allows for free access for my family of up to 4 for a year. The grounds here are gorgeous. Lots of different scenery and they've had an event of some kind every time I've gone. I had my engagement photos taken here because of how diverse and gorgeous the grounds are. The house is also interesting. 1 star off because it is convoluted to pay. You have to park and then walk through the grounds to get to the payment/gift shop area. Staff is very friendly and helpful in finding the way if you see someone, but perhaps signs or an easier location. The greenhouse was much easier to locate. It's also $20 for an adult admission, which is why I got the membership because it isn't much more at that point.
  • We are fairly new to the area and have read wonderful articles concerning Naumkeag. Today was our first visit. The grounds are magnificent. Trees, shrubs and flowers are home to birds and butterflies. The view! Breathtaking. Your the first floor of the cottage or sign up for a guided tour that includes the upper floors. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered our many questions. A beautiful building and fabulous grounds. We will return soon as there is much to savor. Make plans to visit- you will be thrilled.
