Kykuit, Sleepy Hollow

#1 of 138 in Things to do in Westchester County
Garden · Historic Site
Home of John D. Rockefeller--once the richest man in America-- Kykuit features a collection of sculptures and landscaped gardens, maintained for over 100 years. The 40-room house and estate, spread over 1,380 hectares (3,410 acres), once had its own food supplies, gardeners, laborers, and security officers. The property once contained 75 houses and 70 private roads. Take one of several guided tours to see the six-story house. You'll discover underground art galleries with a collection of Picasso tapestries. Outside, expansive terraced spaces contain world-renowned 20th-century sculptures and fountains amidst valleys, and ponds. Most tours are more than two hours long, which includes a shuttle bus ride to and from the estate. • We took the 11:45 a.m. Classic Tour on a Sunday and it was great - the estate wasn't crowded, our tour consisted of a small group and our guide was so knowledgeable! Overall it was a fantastic experience - the estate is full of history, art, beautiful gardens, and a breathtaking view of the Hudson River & Palisades. Cannot recommend this tour enough.
  • Gorgeous grounds. Exceptional tour guide and staff. All around amazing and timeless art. Tours well worth it. Also be sure to get at the designated area listed on the tour tickets at the right time due to tour bus leaves very promptly. Not allowed to visit home without tours so be sure to book first.
