Through cannon and rifle firing demonstrations and tour guides dressed as Confederate soldiers, Savannah's rich history comes to life at Old Fort Jackson. Offering a view of the Savannah River, this National Historic Landmark is the oldest remaining brick fort in Georgia. Named after James Jackson, a British native who fought for American independence, the fort was constructed between 1808 and 1812 under the orders of President Thomas Jefferson. Deemed the best site from which to protect Savannah from attack by sea, the fort was used by local militias and U.S. troops in the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Be sure to peek inside the quarters where the soldiers stayed and make it to the rampart in time to see the cannon demonstration. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Savannah holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Old Fort Jackson and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We went here long ago no matter what the date shows. Honestly don't remember that much. Not too far out of Savannah. Good for a few hours of distraction.  more »

  • OUTSTANDING! The cannon fire is cool! The talk was highly informative and lots of fun! My son was involved in the filming of the movie, Emperor, staged here recently. It's a great stop!
  • Great fort. Good guides providing info. Everyone was super friendly. I highly recommend a visit here if you are interested in the history of Savannah. My daughter was fascinated by the huge cargo ships. The firing of the cannon as the paddleboat passes is awesome. That happens shortly after 4 PM by the way.
