First African Baptist Church, Savannah

Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Originated as one of the first black Baptist congregations in North America, First African Baptist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The organization's beginning dates back to 1773, when African American slaves and freemen organized during the turmoil of the American Revolution, and the church was officially founded in 1777. You can visit the church today, still a working institution and a major part of Savannah history. Admire the antique light fixtures, stained-glass windows, and pipe organ. Take a tour to learn about the church's rich history, including its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Check online for information on service, prayer, and tour times. • This place will take your breath away! The history is important. Do not miss it. Part of the early underground railroad, built by slaves in their "free time." Beautiful and important to remember!  more »

  • I absolutely loved the tour. The tour guide, De’Air/De’Eric (didn’t quite catch his name) did an amazing job. He was extremely knowledgeable. I consider myself well informed on Black History. He gave me new things to consider. I left in even more awe of the accomplishments of Blacks. They’ve made such contributions to our society. I also had the pleasure of attending service there. Although it was a bit dated I enjoyed being transported to the late 70s for s traditional service.
  • This was my favorite place to visit in Savannah. Traci did s great job with the history of the church. The church is beautiful. I will come back next time we are there. God bless!
