The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, Santa Fe

#1 of 86 in Historic Sites in New Mexico
Church · Tourist Spot
Recognized as a basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was founded as a parish the same year as the city was founded, in 1610. The current building featuring Romanesque revival architecture was dedicated in 1887. Note the round arches and Corinthian columns. The rose windows in the front of the church depict the twelve apostles. The best view of the windows is from the chapel where services take place. In the exterior porticos, several statues commemorate saints. The statue of Kateri Tekakwitha pays homage to the first Native American to be beatified. Notice the bronze doors leading back inside the church. The panels on the outside tell the story of the church in Santa Fe history. • The bells calling the faithful to Saturday evening mass drew us off the Plaza on 8/3/19 to come have a look. We were greeted warmly at the door and took a reverential peek before leaving to stroll the lovely grounds. A feeling of sanctuary pervaded the area. Highly recommend visiting this cathedral while in Santa Fe.
  • Went here in March 19'. The lady basically running the parish sent message of the bishop "NO ONE IS TO RECEIVE ON THE TONGUE, NOT PERMITTED HERE'. All old female servers, lay persons at front center of alter handling our precious Lord with their UNCONSECRATED HANDS. Priest, may God bless him, was shoved off to the left of the alter. The lack of reverence or belief by those controlling the liturgy was sickening. The poor laity seem to know better than to show their humility to the Holy Eucharist. They would be scorned. The poor angels watch this, Our Lady watched this. God watches. "Why do we insist on receiving Communion standing and on the hand? Why this attitude of lack of submission to the signs of God? May no priest dare to impose his authority in this matter by refusing or mistreating those who wish to receive Communion kneeling and on the tongue. Let us come as children and humbly receive the Body of Christ on our knees and on our tongue. The saints give us the example. They are the models to be imitated that God offers us!" Cardinal Sarah
