Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe

4.5
#4 of 12 in Historic Sites in Santa Fe
One of the oldest gathering places in the United States and the city's cultural epicenter, Santa Fe Plaza dates back to the first decade of the 17th century. Originally constructed by Spanish colonial authorities, the square is now on the National Register of Historic Places and remains one of the city's most popular areas. Wander the tree-lined walkways, or explore the many restaurants, shops, galleries, and historical buildings surrounding the square. Take note of the nearby basilica, which is a shining example of the adobe architectural style. Check local listings for information on events, such as the concerts and markets frequently hosted at the site. To find out how to plan a trip to Santa Fe, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • We stayed in town and loved our walks. There are craft fairs on the weekends. Driving should be avoided downtown.  more »

  • Love this place. Santa Fe is probably my second favorite town in the States, other than my home town. The people, culture, art, architecture, and history are interesting to learn and follow. I would like to eventually get a small adobe house down there. But, be sure to visit the Historic District, it has I think it's called, "The Palace of Governors", I walk by it every time I can when I'm in the historic district. Great Native American Art, made by natives, and sold by them personally. Wish I had more money to spend while I was down. But, I love the art. This area you will find many things. Like the the Oldest House and Oldest Church. Can't remember which is which, but I think it's the oldest house in America and the oldest church in Santa Fe, and they're are both right next to each other. They also have many art exhibits come through this town, one of which I really wanted to see, but didn't get there in time to see it. Waaahhh, tears to my eyes.
  • Historic landmarks all around, great arts and crafts district. I visited during Indian Market weekend. It was an excellent show of arts and culture. People from all over the world were assembled to appreciate such a beautiful culture. There was good food everywhere, beautiful jewelry, and several others items for sale.
