Built to beautify the city with the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, Coit Tower was completed in 1933. The murals that wrap the tower's rotunda were commissioned by the Public Works of Art Project as part of the New Deal that same year. Murals in the rotunda are open to the public, but those in the stairway are only accessible on Saturday mornings via tours arranged with San Francisco City Guides. The inside was originally intended as a restaurant; however, it was converted into an exhibition space before the tower's opening. Take the elevator to the top for views over the city and bay. I walked to this location from my hotel. Well, I also saw it at night through my window. It's nice to get to the top and have those views of the city, it was a sunny day for me. more »
Great views. I grew up in the area and had never been to Coit Tower before! We went on a clear day and we could see the entire bay, and beyond. There was a guide on top who explained what we were seeing when we asked—super helpful. But the best part of the tower is downstairs—the WPA murals. Such a bounty of colors and depictions of life in the 30’s. There were bank robbers, and farm workers, policemen, industrial workers, just an amazing array of life in California. I spent more time studying the murals than I spent upstairs, and both were unforgettable experiences.
I always recommend you go to attractions that offer panoramic views and Coit Tower is a great example. I enjoyed my visit to the Tower and don’t worry you don’t have to climb the stairs, there’s an elevator that takes you up to the viewing deck at a height of 63 meters. You may say that’s not high enough, but keep in mind the tower sits on a hilltop. The viewing deck offers a 360 degrees view of San Francisco and its bay. Go there, enjoy!
