Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, San Diego

4.8
#8 of 64 in Parks in San Diego
Aptly named, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park features 2.4 km (1.5 mi) of sandstone cliffs in hues that mirror a golden sunset along the Pacific Ocean. For some of the best sights, take the coastal trail along the boulevard to reach rocky hills, sandy arches, and coves. At the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Ladera Street, you can take the stairs down to the beach during low tide. The 28 hectares (68 acres) park connects with Point Loma Reserve, a protected coastal habitat. • Beautiful natural shoreline. Definitely was worth the drive to catch the sunset and for a long walk in the evening..  more »
  • We rented a fabulous AirBnb located right on the Cliffs. Each morning we were greeted with surfers right off our balcony. In the late afternoon, we would rush to the base of the cliffs to wait for...  more »

  • While you will see signs for Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in several locations, the actual entrance was closed for renovations at the time we were there. However, there are many places along the way to pull over and take in the serene breathtaking views. There are spots where people will jump off smaller cliffs into the water. Closer to the park entrance is a steep walkway down to the water used by surfers or anyone willing to get wet or wants a closer view. Be sure to look down at some of the amazing rock formations.
  • Sunset Cliffs is one of my favorite spots in town, and it might be one of the best places to catch the sunset. It's super scenic, and there's plenty of parking---with some parking lots, and also street parking. Be sure to wear proper shoes, as some parts are a bit rocky. There's a stairwell that goes down to the shore---try to time it so that the tide is out, so you're actually able to walk all the way down. There's a beach called "Secret Beach" if you time it just right, and it has tide pools. There's a beach called "Secret Beach" if you time it just right, and it has tide pools. In general, there aren't really any public restrooms---there's one port-a-potty at the very end, and I haven't been brave enough to try it out.
