Fort Stanwix National Monument is a historic national monument in Rome, New York, managed by the National Park Service (NPS). The current fort is a reconstruction of the historic Fort Stanwix occupying approximately 16 acres (6.5 ha) of downtown Rome. The fort site—although not the reconstruction itself—is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.Plan a trip to Rome easily and quickly by telling Inspirock to suggest an itinerary.
Fort Stanwix is historically significant because of its successful defense by American troops during an August 1777 siege. The fort had been built by the British in 1758 at a strategic site along the water route from Lake Ontario to the Hudson River. After American forces captured and rebuilt the fort during the American Revolutionary War, they were besieged by a British army that invaded from Canada via Lake Ontario, hoping to reach the Hudson River. The British force abandoned the siege, a consequence that helped lead to the defeat of a larger British army during the Saratoga campaign.
Fort Stanwix was also the site of the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix between Britain and Native American tribes, as well as of the 1784 Treaty of Fort Stanwix between the tribes and the American government.
Besides the fort reconstruction itself, the national monument includes three short trails that encircle it, one of which follows a portion of the Oneida Carry. The Marinus Willett Collections Management and Education Center preserves the monument's 485,000 artifacts and documents, displays exhibits about Fort Stanwix and the Mohawk Valley, and serves as a regional tourism center.

While Fort Stanwix is a small park/fort, it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and interested in history. The park rangers were very knowledgeable and helpful, and there were... more »
Disappointed that the Visitor Center was closed, but with Covid that was a given. The reconstructed fort was interesting and the rangers on duty were enthusiastic and friendly. It was interesting..... more »
This location is absolutely beautiful and filled with fascinating artifacts. The presentation of the history of the fort is done from multiple perspectives, giving a more complete understanding of the political, social, and economic motivations and climate at the time. The replication of the fort itself is simply amazing! Every turn has something new to explore, and it's very easy to imagine life there during its existence. It's a small enough location for an educational family outing, and the videos, artifacts, and knowledgeable rangers and volunteers will easily keep children interested and engaged. I strongly recommend alotting at least an hour to properly take in the visitors center and the fort itself.
Loved visiting this place. I actually stopped here on my road trip from Toronto to Boston to meet up with a friend who is reconstructing the place. The employees were so nice and informative. Its also almost the half way point from Toronto to Boston if you’re on I-90
