Perched at the end of a long, narrow, man-made spit, Rockland Breakwater Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an important example of a small-town New England lighthouse. Wander out to the lighthouse on a nearly 1.6 km (1 mi) long trail along the protective stone wall and see the structure that helps to protect the nearby town during storms and inclement weather. The building has undergone several structural iterations and upgrades during its lifetime and only narrowly avoided being scrapped by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1965. Keep in mind that rough weather can often make the breakwater inaccessible, though you can also get out to the lighthouse by boat. A super walk for a work out. Requires concentration and balance. It is nearly a mile in each direction. No bathrooms and the large cut stones of the pathway are irregular with considerable distance..... more »
Beautiful view of the harbor and great hike. It is a long hike out to the end, my grandkids were complaining half way through, maybe it is long for kids. Kids also should be careful of the big... more »
Amazing! go at high tide, it's beautiful. great historical area. if walking on breakwater, use shoes with good tread. no flip-flops, crocks, or summer shoes because there are large gaps in between some rocks, where tide has shifted or worn down rocks.
It was a great walk. The area was clean and well kept. The views were wonderful. We enjoyed a seal in the harbor giving us a show. There was also a rather large fish ( not sure what kind) that breached a few times and have us a dancing show off it's own. I'm very glad it was early and overcast for out visit. The skies did clear when we left and it was very hot... If you're easily burned I suggest sun block. It was a beautiful visit and I plan on returning many more times... Loved it...
