Virginia Capitol Building, Richmond

Virginia Capitol Building represents a National Historic Landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clerisseau. Occupied in 1788, the building also served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the American Civil War and survived a major city fire in April 1865. It was modeled off of the ancient Roman temple Maison Carree. Two new wings for the House and Senate were added by 1906 and an underground visitor center was opened in 2007. • You can sign up for a tour or walk around on your own. It's a wonderful piece of History but I highly recommend if you are in the area.  more »
  • What a surprise this tour was, so informative and even though there were protesters around the building and the Capitol was in session, we got a wonderful tour! Highly recommend this tour!  more »

  • The actual tour of the Capitol is interesting in itself, but our docent could have been teaching a history class. So much knowledge! The majority of the time is spent in a few chambers so there is not a lot of walking. The information imparted there was of utmost interest and importance. Of course there is s gift shop which contains a variety of treasures. Our first stop in Richmond definitely encouraged us to explore more.
  • The capitol is always a great stop, it's a mini park with a touch of history. Plenty of statues with plaques to learn from. They hold tours for the mayors house. Plenty of places to sit with water fountains to boot. If this is something your thinking of seeing but not sure it is worth your time then I would suggest you give it a shot.
