National Aviary, Pittsburgh

#3 of 17 in Zoos & Aquariums in Pennsylvania
Zoo · Zoo / Aquarium
At National Aviary, the United States' largest aviary, see over 600 birds, many of which represent endangered or threatened species. Animals from all continents except Antarctica are featured in themed areas. Walk through exhibits where birds fly freely, and get a chance to interact with some of them. You can observe African penguins from underwater viewing rooms, or reserve a private encounter with a penguin. You have the opportunity to join feedings throughout the day, trek among flamingos, and watch bird shows that showcase different species' skills and abilities at the immersion theater. Don't neglect the special non-feathered resident of the aviary--a two-toed sloth. • The National Aviary is a wonderful place to spend time viewing a wide variety of birds. The aviary has a wetlands section, a tropical rainforest, grasslands, and my favorite, Penguin Point. I have....  more »
  • Very extensive collection of birds from all over the world. Grouped according to habitat, good explanations and many informative guides. Expensive, but definitely worth it.  more »
  • If you're in the area this place is a must to visit. When approaching the building we were greeted by a trainer and their Macaw. The trainer was extremely nice and knowledgeable and the bird was incredibly beautiful. Once we went in we got our admission tickets and were presented with the events happening. The events were very reasonably priced (average was $5). We picked the Amazon one since it was in about 10 minutes. The show was great and well worth the money. The rest of the exhibit was filled with great scenery and birds that seemed to be very happy and properly cared for. All of the staff was extremely nice and always willing to help and answer any questions. We even randomly got treated to a owl presentation that was free. It felt like something was always going on at the Aviary and all of the merchandise was very nicely priced. I'd recommend to anyone. Keep up the great work guys.
  • Took my 3 years old here for the first time (for him and me), he was inspired by all about dinosaurs they have there. You can get so close to most birds. Nice for relaxing, not so many people in the morning. Smaller than I expected though, if you just keep walking and you will be done in about half an hour, just need to enjoy it!
