The former site of Washington's slave quarters sits near the entrance of Liberty Bell Center. Upon entering the center, you'll find a series of exhibits before reaching the Liberty Bell. The bell is displayed out of reach (but in plain sight) and still hangs on what is thought to be the original yolk made of American elm. The bell's recognizable crack is clearly visible--observers have referred to it as a metaphor for the fragility of democracy. Be aware that all visitors are required to go through a security screening at the entrance. Liberty Bell Center reviews
Walk around to the end with the large window. You can see the bell very clearly and avoid the long lines to view it. more »
Many interesting facts presented about the liberty bell along the way to the actual bell. We had to wait a long time in a line outside to get in the building due to COVID. Worth the wait to stand... more »
Free to visit. There is usually a line so you have to wait, but it moves quickly and is typically not too long. You can get quite close to the bell and get good photos. There are also staff who will answer questions and tell you about the history of the bell. There are quite a few displays that discuss the history of the bell, particularly its association with abolitionism. It's definitely a great opportunity to visit an important American symbol, and well worth doing while you are in the area.
Great part of United States history in Philadelphia. It was commissioned from London in 1752. It has written in it “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof". It’s a free attraction but you may have to wait in line 30 minutes or so depending on what day and time you do. Weekdays and non-holidays it’s usually less busy. The park outside it’s also a nice area to relax and it’s proximity to Independence Hall it’s also nice since you can visit both.
