This place was never really on my radar, but I’m very glad I stopped in. Pretty grounds with picnic tables and groomed paths to walk on as you observe the mound. The mound is beautiful and the historical feature itself is quite fascinating. There is a tall platform with steps to climb that overlooks a good portion of the mound. Ample restrooms, friendly staff and a small store and museum with reasonably priced merchandise. Definitely worth checking out.
The Serpent Mound Historical Site is the largest effigy mound in the world, about 1,400 feet long. An effigy mound is a giant earthen sculpture used as a shrine to honor the powerful spirit it represents. This mound represents the Great Serpent who was the Lord of the World Below — a world beneath the surface of the earth! In the traditions of the American-Indian tribes, the people call upon the Great Serpent for the power to cure illness or be successful in animal hunting.
