North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center, North Charleston

Built in the heart of a booming shopping Mecca close to the Charleston International Airport, the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center houses the largest collection of fully restored American LaFrance fire appartus in the county.

Doors to this fire truck wonderland opened in April, 2007. Enthusiasts and casual observers alike can learn about the history of fire fighting and marvel at the evolution of a most useful invention. This is a place where families can come to learn. Residents and visitors will congregate and enjoy themselves, but also learn something that might one day save a life.

The collection of nineteen antique fire trucks includes a hand operated fire pump and two horse-drawn steam engines. Other exhibits range from a cinema with a talking robot and a film depicting the history of fire fighting to the home hazards interactive exhibit and the Great Escape exhibit. The Great Escape not only provides fun for young visitors, but lets them experience the thrill of flying down a fire pole and learn smart ways to exit a burning building. Don't forget to test your skills in our 1st person driving simiulator and make sure you create your own personalized fire patch to wear home.

  • It was nice and quiet. Very informative with a couple of interactive exhibits. A simulator and some shows for the younger audience. Admission was reasonable at 6$ for an adult(don't have any type of heritage pass or anything when I went, they have special museum passes though) and I am overall quite glad I went.
  • This is a real treat for the kids. My twelve year old remained engaged through the interactive true/false “quiz” and my four year old loved everything- especially the fire pole. Our kids learned a lot while having fun. The price of entry made The Fire Museum a top choice on our trip. I would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone!
