Walk, take a tram, or boat your way through Norfolk Botanical Garden. These gardens are listed as a Virginia Historic Landmark and are on the National Register of Historic Places. They originally opened in 1938 on 30 hectares (75 acres) of land, though today they are slightly smaller due to the nearby airport. With 19.3 km (12 mi) of walking paths, you can visit the Bicentennial Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, and English-style Border Walk, among many other landscape-themed gardens. Seasonal tours via tram or boat offer information about the habitat around Lake Whitehurst, or you can use the self-guided cell phone tour as you pass numbered signs within the gardens. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Norfolk holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Norfolk Botanical Garden and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Very nice place! We came by after reading about it online and we were very pleased. Very well kept and they have everything growing out there. The butterfly house was cool and made for some great photo ops. If you like taking pictures, you could easily spend all day here. We were there for hours and still didn't see everything. Would have stayed longer but we had to head back for dinner. The pathways are long so be prepared to walk, its bigger than it appears online. They do have a trolley as well that will take you around if walking far is not for you. The staff was great and very friendly. Great cheap fun. There's also the bonus that the parking lot is right next to the airport. Walk up the hill and you're right by the runway, pretty cool to watch the planes come and go.
  • Super awesome. Just go visit.... I am a plant scientist and I'll say this - this place is a high quality attraction, and a great place to volunteer at Get the annual membership if you live in the area. Rose garden and butterfly enclosure are must have experiences.... Take your kids to watch landings and takeoffs from Norfolk airport that is right next to these gardens, by the main visitor's parking lot. Cheers!
