Immerse yourself in maritime history at The Mariners' Museum & Park, which houses more than 30,000 authentic artifacts, works of art, and models. You can learn about the naval customs and life on board a ship, and even design your own vessel. The collection of artifacts ranges from ships' armament and equipment to decorations and navigational instruments. The museum's USS Monitor Center houses artifacts salvaged from the wreck of this innovative, Civil War ironclad. Through the collection of paintings and miniatures, you can see how ships and the sea inspired artists and craftspeople throughout the world. The museum's library at Christopher Newport University holds one of the largest collections of books and sources on maritime history on the American continent. While the museum requires an admission fee, the library is free and open to the public. A great place for families. They consistently have events going on each week and bigger events throughout the year. I recently became a member to save on ticket prices for these events, and after registering for a couple it's already worth it. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they clearly take pride in their work.
Amazing museum, especially with the $1 admission during the Summer. Amazing relics and models and very entertaining. The Monitor portion of the museum is absolutely stunning. The recreations, interactive exhibits, and artifacts are second to none. While it may not be the best for children, those who are interested in naval history absolutely should make a visit.
