The John Muir National Historic Site is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Martinez, Contra Costa County, California. It preserves the 14-room Italianate Victorian mansion where the naturalist and writer John Muir lived, as well as a nearby 325-acre (132 ha) tract of native oak woodlands and grasslands historically owned by the Muir family. The main site is on the edge of town, in the shadow of State Route 4, also known as the "John Muir Parkway."

The best time to visit is March or April when the fruit trees in the small orchard next to the beautiful Victorian home are in bloom. more »

This is a great place to take the kids and grandparents. It's great for all ages. We had a picnic there and enjoyed the scenery. Don't forget to get the junior ranger badges for the kids. Across the street, there's a nice place to hike. I like how there's a tour, short video, and gift shop. Nice amenities. Enjoy a relaxing Sunday or any day here.

Great place, lots of history, nice decent led tour, nice place to come out and picnic. I hosted a small thing with my son and two friends. We all enjoyed learning about John Muir and the people who worked there were willing to answer and questions. My son also was able to get a junior ranger badge as they had an activity book to take with you as you explored the grounds.
