It was founded by Irene Lewis in the early 1960s on a single lot in the middle of a residential part of Lomita, and had its grand opening on June 23, 1967. The museum building is a replica of a 19th-century depot, Boston & Maine's Greenwood Station that once stood in Wakefield, Massachusetts, and there is a full size replica of a water tower. The museum grounds now function as a small public park.
Lomita Railroad Museum reviews
Beautiful attraction within the middle of the city. Many residents do not know about it hence missing out Very well maintained and preserved trains that once circulated this state more »
Stopped numerous times when they were closed. Finally got there when they were open. It's an interesting history of both full size and hobby size steam railroading. Children do quickly get board but..... more »
Small but very awesome little museum found in a residential neighborhood. Free parking on site. $4 for adults, $2 for children 3+. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. There are a lot of cool items inside the museum, and you're able to walk inside the trains which are well kept. There's a small park across the way with a couple of trains, benches and shade which would be a perfect spot for lunch after visiting the museum. My kiddos and I will definitely be back.
A little gem on a quiet residential street. Lots of detailed local RR history and lots about miniature ride - on live steam locomotives. No rides. It's a history museum, not an amusement park. We loved it.
