President James Buchanan's Wheatland
Wheatland, or the James Buchanan House, is a brick, Federal style house outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster Township, Lancaster County. It was formerly owned by the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan.Using our world travel planner, Lancaster attractions like President James Buchanan's Wheatland can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
The house was constructed in 1828 by William Jenkins, a local lawyer. It was sold to William M. Meredith in 1841. Wheatland changed hands again in 1848, when it was purchased by Buchanan. Buchanan occupied the house for the next two decades, except for several years during his ambassadorship in Great Britain and during his presidency. After his death in 1868, Wheatland was inherited by Buchanan's niece, Harriet Lane, who sold it in 1881 to George Willson. It was inherited by a relative of Willson's in 1929. Wheatland was put up for sale again after the relative died in 1934 and was acquired by a group of people who set up a foundation for the purpose of preserving the house. Wheatland was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. It was designated a contributing property to the Northeast Lancaster Township Historic District in 1980. The foundation and the adjacent historical society merged in 2009.

Currently, the house is closed, but the grounds are open and you can wander about. I've never been there before and may never be back, so I was glad we took the time to stop. Something I liked very..... more »

A must visit to step back in time and view Wheatland, home of our nation's 15th President. Built in 1828 by William Jenkins, Buchanan was our only President to remain a bachelor his entire life, his orphaned niece, Harriet Lane, whom he would adopt, would serve him wells as his official White House hostess. Remember to absorb what all he was politically involved in leading up to the American Civil War as he handed the reins over to Abraham Lincoln in such a volatile time. Simply incredible and to tour his Mansion for us was a great experience. Purchase your admittance ticket at the main building where a great exposition of items is waiting. Our hostess was dressed in a magnificent period dress, was very informative which helped to bring our tour alive when we visited in August. Restrooms on premise. Easy walking tour with stairs to climb to the second floor. Time permitting, you can visit President Buchanan's Grave site at the Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, PA. We really enjoyed this tour. There are many original artifacts in this beautiful home. Jerry was our guide. He was enthusiastic and helpful... very knowledgeable! We would highly recommend this as a field trip or day trip!
