This is a super-unique adventure that I’d recommend to anyone. We came away with so many fossils and will definitely be going back. First off: DON'T GO THE WAY GOOGLE MAPS SUGGESTS. We came from the West and Google maps told us to take a little dirt road right to the safari. After about fifteen minutes, we encountered a sign saying “Warning: Road is not safe. This is not the road to the pay-to-dig Fossil Quarry”. Luckily we had printed off the map from the website, which takes you through Kemmerer. Print off the map and you’ll be just fine. Digging for fossils was just an awesome experience. George (the owner) sets you up with a hammer, a chisel, and a little bit of knowledge. You can either dig your own slabs right out of the quarry wall, or you can search through rows and rows of big rocks that the Safari had laying around. We spent $75 for the 4 hour block (plus the 1 bonus hour) and it was worth every penny. Remember to bring bubble wrap or newspaper to pack your fossils in. The road to the quarry is pretty bumpy and George called it a “fossil killer”. George also has some tile-saws for anyone to use - so if you find a good-lookin fossil on a huge rock but you want to smash it down to size, don’t do it. I had a few nice fossils that I ruined by trying to resize them. Just use the saws!
The working face of the quarry which is open to the public is for the most part intensely fractured and the rock is hard and brittle. the result is that most of the fish you'll find will be broken, small 3-4" fish. There was only one locale on the quarry where you could extract a slab large enough to recover a complete larger fish. After 8 hours of splitting rock I was able to collect about 15 suitable/complete 3-4" fish fossils. Also, the rock slakes (deteriorates) after exposure, meaning that you will have to treat the fossil and the rock to keep it from falling apart. Maybe as the quarry advances into the hill and away from the canyon's slope/outcrop, rock quality will improve.- it's not there yet.
