Unveiled in June 1991 a 34ft tall bronze statue of a soldier, gagged and bound, impaled in the back by a bayoneted rifle, stands atop a granite base containing Katyn soil. It commemorates the massacre of thousands of Polish prisoners by order of Joseph Stalin in April and May 1940 after Soviet Union troops had invaded eastern Poland. The event came after the partition of Poland and the occupation of the nation during World War II. The eastside of the pediment has a bronze relief depicting the starvation of Poles sent to Siberia.
After the September 11 attacks a plaque was unveiled on the front side of the pediment, saying:
NEVER FORGET! PRAY FOR ALL THE INNOCENT VICTIMS AND HEROES WHO DIED IN THE TERRORIST ATTACK ON AMERICA SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 The unveiling ceremony took place on September 12, 2004.

Oh this is definitely a great place to go. It's a memorial on the pier. You have the best view of the Manhattan skyline. Also, there's plenty of great food trucks. The statue itself is very beautiful. It's majestic. And the piers are wonderful. You can bring your whole family and find plenty of food and seating for all. I've come here with family, with friends, with anyone and everyone, and there's never a dull moment. Would recommend this place to anyone.
Right next to the waterfront with a lot of food trucks. A great place to come in one of the weekend evenings and spend time eating a light dinner. Dosa Spot, Mexican grill and other food trucks have some nice options for you.
