Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Honolulu

4.4
Famous for its sheltered inlet of calm and clear turquoise water, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve protects about 400 different species of fish and attracts amateur and professional snorkelers from around the world. The bay is also a nursery for green sea turtles, which you may see nesting as you walk or swim along the coastline. You can rent diving equipment if you don't bring your own and spend a day searching for parrotfish and coral. The preserve's regulations prohibit touching or walking on the coral heads, which often resemble large rocks on the ocean's floor. Keep in mind that touching or brushing up against coral or marine rocks may also result in serious wounds. Our Honolulu day trip app makes visiting Honolulu and other {2} attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • The view from the top of Hanauma Bay, before you trek down, is stunning...and I wish we had stopped there. Yes, the snorkelling was lovely, and seeing all the different fish was a great experience...  more »

  • There are lots of places to go snorkeling on the island of Oahu, but Hanauma Bay is easily the best place for the novice, children, and those who might be less confident in their swimming ability. It is also the most well known and frequently recommended, so be prepared to deal with crowds. If you arrive before 7am you don’t have to pay to park or enter the park, and you are also much more likely to find a place to park your car and your blanket. Walking down to the beach you will have some great views of the bay. Take the time to enjoy the view and take some pictures. The only reason to go to Hanauma Bay rather than any of the other Oahu beaches is because you want to snorkel and see some fish, and hopefully some other marine life including live coral. Mask and snorkel are required, fins make the experience better. Swimming close to the reef, or on top of the reef is the best way to see sea life. You have to be confident in your ability to swim in close proximity to the reef; relax and take your time/get comfortable. Swimming outside the inner reef line is truly the way to go if you are comfortable with your ability. Hanauma Bay is a protected waterway and is relatively calm outside the reef line. Regardless of your ability, Hanauma Bay will deliver.
  • Absolutely love this place, very beautiful and natural. The crystal clear and fish filled water provides the perfect conditions for snorkelling to your heart's content. Love it!
