Walker Sisters' Cabin, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Visit the homestead of the Walker family and learn about its history at Walker Sisters' Cabin. After the national park was formed and locals were resettled from the area, the five Walker sisters refused to go away and were granted permission to live in the park. It wasn't until 1964, when the last of the sisters died, that the National Park Service gained control of the property. Explore the cabin of the sisters, who were known for their adherence to a traditional lifestyle, and observe their well-preserved homestead. You'll have to walk 5.15 km (3.2 mi) to reach the cabin, so wear comfortable footwear and bring refreshments. • Beautiful piece of history hidden in the Smoky Mountains! We enjoyed our trek to the Little Greenbrier School, cemetery and the Walker Sisters Cabin. Loved reading about the Walker Sister's and their father and to see the homestead in person is truly wonderful! Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!
  • Nice gentle walk out to the Walker Sisters Cabin. If you start at the Metcalf Bottoms picnic area you will add an additional .7 miles by starting on the Metcalf Bottoms trail before continuing on the Little Brier Gap Trail. This is a moderately trafficked trail.
