  • This is basically your typical visitor center, but if you are entering the national park from Cherokee, NC, it would be a good first stop. The small museum displays were closed due to Covid. However.....  more »
  • The ranger was very friendly and helpful with my questions and COVID protocols were firmly in place. We enjoyed our stop there, along with the museum outside.  more »

  • Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Cherokee, NC is a wonderful place because around 4 to 5pm every night of the year a small herd of elk come out to graze in their open field. the last time i was there 30 plus elk should up to graze. from the road side i was with in 50 ft of one. even at 50ft away from one of these male elk is plenty close to these big boys. so the elk alone make this a 5 star stop.
  • totally worth stopping in. We just stopped because the field next to it frequently has elk. No elk so we stopped by... very enjoyable! Lots of cool stuff inside about the history and area. Then there is an outside area that is basically an old farm with a nice tour path through it. Again, definitely worth stopping by!
