  • Has been years since we visited this dam but coming back is still thrill. It is amazing to know the history. There are plenty of spots to pull over to view lake and dam. History markers are helpful...  more »
  • While I had been to the area many times, I had not ventured to Fontana Dam and its surroundings before. It is a magnificent feat of engineering going back 80 years and a must-see for travelers in NC.....  more »

  • This is one of the most amazing visitors centers I have ever encountered. The views are gorgeous, of course. Parking is ample. Not only do they have regular bathrooms, but separate ones on the other side of the building with full showers in them (it is right on the Appalachian Trail). I most definitely recommend stopping for this visit. No cell service, fyi!
  • Beautiful place. It has free hot showers for Appalachian Trail hikers and a very nice shelter a short way up the road. Great place to refresh along the trail.
