Bowman Lake, Glacier National Park

#12 of 24 in Nature in Glacier National Park
Water Body · Nature / Park
Bowman Lake is in the northwestern portion of Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake is accessed via a 6 miles (9.7 km) unpaved road from the small town of Polebridge. At 1,706 acres (690 ha), Bowman Lake is the third largest lake in the park, after Lake McDonald and Saint Mary Lake.
The campground is located close to the shore, and the trees along the site provide privacy. Day users have access to the picnic ground, and there are several hiking trails within the area. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular on the lake which is of a glacially cold temperature. Motorized boats of 10 horsepower (7 kW) or less are allowed on the lake. Because of the long, bumpy road, recreational vehicles and truck/trailer combinations are not recommended.

  • This is one of the 2 northernmost lakes near the Canadian border. The drive is rough and long over gravel roads outside the park but well worth the effort.  more »

  • True gem of Glacier National Park. The road out in amazing and has recently been redone. Be sure to stop in Polebridge for a sandwich and some snacks. The drive out takes a bit. Lots of gravel. Luckily we had the protections on our rental car so we didnt worry. When you pull into the campsite there's lots of options for terrain and mainly spots to choose from. I'd suggest arriving early on a Thursday or Friday if you're wanting to get a good spot as it can be busy. There are trails around the lake and other smaller lakes you can hike to. At night be sure to step out and look up at the stars. I promise you won't be disappointed.
  • Beautiful location, beautiful scenery but wow don’t try the road unless you have 4 wheel drive vehicle with a lot of clearance. And don’t forget the bug and bear spray.
