Hear the story of Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade, the only civilian to be killed during the Battle of Gettysburg, at Jennie Wade House. Here, you can take a guided tour of the house where Wade was shot by a stray bullet during the three-day battle. On July 1, 1863, 20-year old Wade was visiting her sister when one of the more than 150 bullets that hit the home shot through the door and pierced her heart. The home is decorated with artifacts from the day Wade died, and guides in period clothing retell the story of her death. The guides also describe life in Gettysburg during the battle. During the tour, your guide will point out various bullet holes in the walls, including the one through which the fateful bullet entered. Notice the floorboard where Wade stood--still marked with her blood. Jennie Wade House Reviews
I enjoyed the Jennie Wade house but I wouldn't say it's a must do. We did a self guided tour (and the brochure guide was great), but it only took us like 25 mins...maybe it's longer and more detail... more »
Haunted!! We toured the house on July 6, 2020; I have a video of a green orb floating around and a glowing yellow orb coming up the stairs (I included these photos). I asked if anyone was in the... more »
Absolutely wonderful Scott our guide was great a definite to do on your visit to Gettysburg. Thank you so much enjoyed the tour. We are doing Jennie Wade and orphanage tour tonight can't wait.
Great place for kids about civil war. Reply to Jennie Wade House: First thing, it was difficult to find a parking spot as the parking lot in front of the building was marked as "Hotel parking only". Second, about the Jenny Wade House, a suggestion is that there could be more questions-and-answers interaction to get the audience more involved. Another suggestion could be to have monitors on the first floor for handicaps, people with disabilities that don't have the ability to walk up the stairs and see the second floor. Other than that, this was an amazing experience for first timers that taught a lot about the civilian's experience during the war.
