Located on the site of one of the bloodiest episodes in American history, Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the landscape of the historic 1863 battle between the Union and Confederate forces. Though the battle resulted in the largest number of casualties in the entire American Civil War, it became the turning point of the dramatic conflict when the Union army turned back the Confederate attempt to invade the North. The military park contains most of the original battlefield, as well as many support areas, including the supply and hospital locations. Start your exploration at the park's museum and visitor center, where you can see over 40,000 war artifacts and an enormous cyclorama painting of the battle by French artist Paul Philippoteaux. A visit to Gettysburg National Military Park represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Gettysburg online trip planner to plot your vacation.
Gettysburg National Military Park reviews
We did a Segway tour through the battlefield. It's huge, way more to see than can be done in one day (so Segways or riding bikes are a great option!). There's a special feeling standing on Little... more »
The Battle for Gettysburg is well remembered here. The museum is full of artifacts and information, although the video exhibits were out of service for COVID precautions. The movie was a good... more »
A must see if only for the historical significance. We started at the Visitor’s Center and then did the driving tour. The Visitor’s Center wasn’t busy when we arrived before 10 am. However, after that, it quickly became crowded with large groups and individuals. As you might expect, more people at the popular spots along the driving tour. It took us over 5 hours to complete the loop. Of course, depending on how many stops you take it can take less or more time. We didn’t get to the Eisenhower home or watch the movie at the Visitor’s Center. There are 16 stops along the way in addition to the many additional markers and monuments. There are not any restaurants along the way so bring snacks/food and water. The bathroom facilities are few and far between. Be prepared for port-a potties. Consider hiring a guide who is well versed in the history and can help bring the magnitude to life.
One of the best run parks in the country. As someone who has always been fascinated with the civil war, I can say that you really don’t get a true appreciation of what the brave men did on both sides until you are actually there. It’s sacred ground. The tour guides are awesome and really help you gain appreciation for what happened there so many many years ago. The park exceeded all of my expectations, and they were high to begin with.
