The Rising Sun Tavern, Fredericksburg

4.7
#1 of 8 in Museums in Fredericksburg
While not serving food or drink since 1827, the Rising Sun Tavern Museum provides a lively interpretation of Tavern life.

George Washington’s youngest brother, Charles, built this landmark in 1760 as his private residence. The building became a tavern in 1792.

Today, the “tavern wenches” and male “indentured servants” entertain visitors as though they have just stepped off their coaches into colonial times.

  • This is a great museum! I originally considered skipping it for lack of time but I’m glad I didn’t. One particular tour guide (don’t remember her name) was very enthusiastic and knowledgable, treating us like real guests at a tavern. I enjoyed learning about how taverns operated in the 1700s and how women and men led very different lives in the same building. I would definitely recommend visiting this museum.
  • Very cool history. We did a behind the scenes tour and learned a lot of interesting stuff.
