The Museum of the Albemarle is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It serves as the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. This area of North Carolina is sometimes considered the birthplace of English North America, with close proximity to Roanoke Island and the "Lost Colony" of 1585.

Established in 1967 in a former NC Highway Patrol station south of Elizabeth City, the Museum has since expanded with a new three-story museum building in 2008 located on the Downtown Waterfront.

The core exhibit is "Our Story", a 6200 sq. ft. gallery featuring over 700 artifacts that interpret the rich history and culture of the 16-county Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina.

Other branches of The North Carolina Museum of History include:

North Carolina Museum of History - (Raleigh)

Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum - (Hatteras)

Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex - (Fayetteville)

Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center - (Old Fort)

North Carolina Maritime Museum - (Beaufort, Southport)

  • Much larger and more exhibits than had been expected. One could spend hours here if you had the time. Not only exhibitions on local history but also ancient worldwide excavations currently on display!  more »
  • Enjoyed this museum and learned a lot about the region, history and people who made this area what it is. The exhibits are well presented and very interesting.  more »

  • Very nice staff and clean environment. Took my boys, 6.5 yrs old and 3.5 yrs old, walking through and a staff member came and answered all the questions they had. Love that they change some of the exhibits too!! Helps provide good history for the area and has a couple memorabilia from when my mother-in-law and husband were children. Makes it more personal and community based.
  • Beautiful location and performance venue for my niece & sister in law's recital! Lots of history & adorable gift shop. Clean restrooms always a plus!
