Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park

#12 of 21 in Historic Sites in Florida Keys
Must see · Historic Site · Nature / Park
See proof of a young nation's determination to protect its shores and its shipping at Fort Jefferson. Now a highlight of the Dry Tortugas National Park, the fort was built in 1847, and it's one of the largest masonry structures in the western hemisphere. Even though the fort was never finished or fully equipped, it was a key point in coastal defense until the end of 19th century. A major part of the original structure is still standing, and you can tour the fort, learn about its history, and admire the gargantuan walls. Garden Key Island, where the fort is located, is accessible by a ferry, seaplane, or across a private bay. Before or after visiting the fort, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and camping on the island. Plan my trip to Dry Tortugas National Park with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • The fort is an imposing structure with a lot of interesting history. The environment of the island is beautiful and seems healthy. There are plenty of fun things to do on a day trip.  more »
  • Fort Jefferson is a very historic landmark, basically representing the pinnacle of castle and fort technology. The huge site is maintained as best as could be reasonably expected. The displays are very informative. Walking the top of the walls yields amazing views. Use Yankee Freedom III to get there, and all of the practical drawbacks of the site are completely mitigated. The snorkeling is also amazing.
  • Amazingly beautiful place. From the history. To the amazing crystal clear water. Best spots to snokel are where the old loading docks were. Best way to enjoy it is to take a self tour. That way you can move at a your own pace. So that you can enjoy more time in the water.
