Lake Shetek State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, on Lake Shetek, which is the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota and the headwaters of the Des Moines River. It is most popular for water recreation and camping. However the park also contains historical resources related to the Dakota War of 1862, including an original log cabin and a monument to 15 white settlers killed there and at nearby Slaughter Slough on August 20, 1862.Put Lake Shetek State Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Currie trip planning website.
The park and lake were developed by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. Two districts of park structures built in the National Park Service rustic style are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Lake Shetek State Park occupies 1109acre on the east shore of Lake Shetek in northeastern Murray County, outside the town of Currie. The park is about equidistant from both Tracy to the north and Slayton to the southwest, and southeast of the city of Marshall.
Almost of shoreline on Lake Shetek lie within the park boundary, though inholdings with private homes comprise some of that distance. The park includes 45acre Loon Island, which is connected to the mainland by a 1000ft causeway. Two smaller lakes, two fish rearing ponds, and two marshes are also within the park boundaries.
Lake Shetek State Park reviews
This was my favorite state park in southwest Minnesota. I stopped here for a day trip. It is about a 1.5hr drive from New Ulm. The park had a good variety of trails and had a beach on Lake Shetek. We.... more »
The weather in early March has been beautiful so decided to take advantage of it and stayed in one of the camper cabins. The cabin was clean, as well as the bathrooms. The heat in the cabin was just..... more »
Great state park. It's a bit out of the way, which is a GOOD thing! Great combo of full, electric only or primitive (even 50amp!) sites. Well maintained and friendly staff. The sunrise campground, which has the full hookups (and where we stayed) is more open to the prairie but still backed up to woods. It has OUTSTANDING night sky viewing! The other campground is wooded and closer to the lake with electric only but the sites we're well laid out to minimize crowding. There are also 4 cabins to rent in that lower campground. There is no beach, but there is a small swimming landing. Cell service (we needed to work a bit) varied from decent to poor, not great. Overall we really enjoyed it and would happily return.
A great state park with plenty to do for the family. We walked over to Loon Island to swim off the shore, because the swimming area isn’t the greatest. This park is clean and the park rangers and staff were nice and friendly. My kids loved hiking around the park and seeing all of the deer, frogs, and toads. We forgot our fishing gear so we were able to check out some fishing poles and tackle boxes from the office to use and bought some worms at the gas station that was in town. There is small playground by the swimming area changing building that the kids enjoyed playing on. We will definitely be returning to Lake Shetek State Park!
