#1 of 11 in Things to do in Cortez
Must see · Ruin · National Park
Marking an area inhabited for tens of thousands of years, Hovenweep National Monument includes a group of six village groups built by ancestral Puebloans that include towers, castles, cliff dwellings, and more. Reminiscent of medieval designs in Europe, these structures testify to the indigenous peoples' superb masonry skills. During your tour, keep your eyes peeled for petroglyphs and try to interpret the rock art. Choose between three hiking trails to explore the attraction, or stay in the onsite campground and trek all the paths in a few days. Before hitting the trail, stop by the visitor's center for maps and watch the educational film for more details. Note: do not rely on GPS signals to navigate the area, as they tend to send visitors to the wrong locations. Use a map instead. • Great place to visit. The main trail at the visitors center was well done with good signage and nice trails. Clean restrooms and picnic area. Definitely worth the trip.  more »
  • Sunny easy walk to view the ruins probably hot in the summer time. You will need 1-2 hours to see the main ruins, visitor center was Covid closed but the clean restrooms were open. A nice bench...  more »

  • Visited in 1991. Pristine, beautiful, peaceful. One of my favorite places on earth. Ruins were very well preserved at that time, also road was not paved so it limited traffic there but was a challenging drive from Cortez, apparently much easier now. There is a deep spiritual peace to this place that I hope will not be ruined by oil and gas drilling now nearby.
  • What an awesome place!! Out in the middle of nowhere, here is this modern building with the nicest ranger. She gave us lots of info about the site and showed us a movie about Pueblo's. Recommend to all.
